Dr. Katleho Masita is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Wits Machine Intelligence and Neural Discovery (MIND) Institute and the Robotics, AI and Learning (RAIL) Lab. He holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Johannesburg.
His research investigates how embodied intelligent agents can learn, reason, and adapt safely in complex and dynamic environments. He is particularly interested in reinforcement learning, world models, representation learning, continual learning, computational neuroscience, and trustworthy autonomous decision-making. His work seeks to develop data-efficient AI systems that can generalise beyond their training conditions, learn continuously from interaction, and make reliable decisions under uncertainty.
Before joining the MIND Institute and RAIL Lab, his research focused on applying machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, and predictive modelling to intelligent renewable energy systems. His previous work contributed AI-based methods for forecasting, fault diagnosis, predictive maintenance, anomaly detection, and autonomous decision support in solar and wind energy applications.
His current research builds on this interdisciplinary foundation by exploring neuroscience-inspired approaches to embodied intelligence and reinforcement learning. He is interested in developing trustworthy embodied agents that combine perception, internal representations, memory, learning, and decision-making to operate effectively in real-world settings. His broader research vision is to contribute to adaptive and human-centred AI systems that are safe, interpretable, resilient, and capable of continual improvement.
